In the swampy suburbs just southwest of New Orleans is a masterpiece thought of from the golfing minds of Steve Elkington, Pete Dye, and New Orleans own Kelly Gibson. It's name, TPC Louisiana and it hosts one of the prestigious events on the PGA Tour, the Zurich classic. But yesterday it hosted the Louisiana state championship amateur qualifier. And like it's professional predecessor only two weeks before it provided drama and excitement that was heart stopping till the end. It appeared that the field for the Louisiana amateur championship, which will be played from June 8th through the 11th at the exclusive Country Club of Louisiana, had been set with the final group still on the course. That is until One of the participants out of the final threesome decided that he wanted to play in the championship. Martinez Fernando-Bello Crawford, out of Montz Louisiana, who is no stranger to playing in big events at TPC (Zurich pro/am), was moving along and on pace to easily make the cut until he hit his approach shot on the par four 16th. As Crawford's downswing was coming into contact with his golf ball a fellow countrymen, Guadalupe Miguel-Angel Guillermo Hernandez's transistor radio rambled a conversation that could be heard by anyone within 10 yards of the Mexican grounds keeper. Crawford made pure contact with his golf ball and smothered it left in to the water hazard making a double bogey and all but put him out of the cut line with two of the hardest golf holes remaining. Crawford took his medicine and went out there thinking that he just needed to make a cumulative par on both holes to come close to making the cut. When Crawford's final putt sank he had accomplish that goal. After signing the scorecard he was notified that he did make the cut. During a very emotional interview a sobbing Crawford was quoted saying, "this is very special to me. I've played in so many events but this one is really special. I really thought that when Guaddy's radio bursts with "Me encanta el golf, este es un evento muy divertido y me alegro de ver a mi homeboy haciendo bien." I thought I had blown my chance of playing in the amateur. My caddy, Ellis Lee Sampson II, really calmed me down and told me to just go and play my game. I really want to thank a lot of people but I don't have that much time I have to get my kids to swim practice but I promise I will give an interview at the conclusion of my final round at the Louisiana amateur championship. I love you all."
