Scientists around the world worry about possible new source for dental implants

Today scientists from around the world heard from a group of dentists, dental surgeons, orthodontists, and periodontists from The Tooth and Nothing but the Tooth Foundation on the subject of tooth decay, extractions, with the main focus on dental implants, past, present and future.

Among the orthodontists was Chinese Orthodontist Dr. Fang. His insights on the subject of dental implants made many scientists concerned about the biting nature of dental implants in the future. But before we discuss the future for implants, we need to understand the past and present.

In the past before implants, dentists would use partials or full denture plates. Many people who had teeth that were missing from accident, defect, or surgery, were given a partial or full denture plate to aid with eating as well as aesthetics. While most suffered little to no discomfort, dentures have had some not so good issues.

Before, when one would bite off more than they could chew, the area between tooth and cheek was a good place to store your foot while trying to speak, and if you have had your teeth removed it does make it easier to speak tongue in cheek.

With the invention of the implants, and the procedures for implanting them, many people with dental issues, were giving an option for a better smile.

However, at present, doctors and dentists alike have found a significant amount of people that have experienced a problem in one way another including full on rejection.

The artificial nature of the teeth and/or the metal from the stainless steel used to secure the teeth to the jaw bond, can sometimes cause infections and even rejections to the implants. The whole procedure costing thousands of dollars to do, can sometimes cost even more to remove the implants and go back to more traditional dentureware.

Dr. Fang today however, has introduced a radical idea for natural dental implantation on a whole new level. Animal Dentistry.

Inspired by a comedic commercial for doggy dentures, Dr. Fang has theorized that one day ordinary animals may hold the key to the future of the dental industry.

"I believe that the problem with implants is the artificial nature. To overcome this issue we need a more natural solution. Most adults will never be able to donate teeth like other organs, as most teeth will decay before the average person would typically die. And studies have shown a significant decrease in people's lifespan when they lose their teeth. This leaves a huge deficit of natural teeth for people that would need them." said Dr. Fang.

Dr. Fang has come up with such a radical idea though, it has caused many scientists to rethink the matter.

According to his idea, animals could be genetically altered to have human teeth. The avgerage life cycle for most animals is fractionally smaller than humans. So the animals could be given full lives and only upon their deaths would the teeth be extracted.

While this is only speculative, and not yet being tested, it's in this reporters opinion that horses my not be the only ones long in the mouth.
