HALF OF CHILDREN IN SCHOOL AGE ARE PASSIVE SMOKERS
Half of children of school age have significant levels of toxic substances of tobacco smoke (cotinine) in the blood: they are passive smokers. MEASURES TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION
The National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking has proposed several measures to reduce consumption: modification of taxation, regulation of advertising, protection of children, the existence of spaces without smoke, as well as aids to stop smoking.
On the other hand, studies indicate that integral prohibitions of the promotion could reduce consumption between 6 and 7 percent. The European Parliament has issued a regulation whereby all states should totally ban tobacco advertisements since 2006.
Martínez concludes that the solution to this problem is the joint action of the agents involved. "There is a real social problem, and there are many sectors involved (parents, educators, doctors, the Administration and the media), so it is necessary for the Administration to carry out campaigns that explain the real consequences of smoking" .
