Many studies show that refugees are faced with a lot of problems when trying to enter the labor market. From the refugees that came to the Netherlands in 2014, 90 depends on social welfare after 18 months. Refugees that do have a job often work part time or have temporary contracts. Even in the case of refugees that have settled in the Netherlands for years, they are still lagging behind in labor force participation compared to other immigrant groups and Dutch citizens. The main causes identified with refugees’ disadvantaged position in the labor market are the following:
A lack of proficiency in Dutch, which prevents refugees from getting a job and getting the education required for certain jobs.
Inadequate diplomas or diplomas not recognized in the Netherlands that are required for jobs, as well as a mismatch in supply and demand in the labor market.
(Mental) health: many refugees suffer from PTSD due to what they endured while fleeing their country, making the journey to get to the Netherlands, and then often being relocated within the Netherlands while applying for asylum.
Refugees lack the ability to build up a social network which is necessary to properly integrate and learn Dutch or can even increase the chance of finding a job. Refugees often find themselves in a vicious cycle; in order to practice their Dutch, they need to integrate and communicate with locals to improve, however it is exactly this lack of Dutch skills that prevents them from communicating and building these social networks.
(Social) media and public opinion is very divided and sometimes polarized. Refugees are often faced with discrimination and prejudice when applying for jobs. It is also argued that some refugees lack the social skills necessary to function in a Dutch organization, lacking the skills to present themselves in job interviews or to accept authority from employers. While research on this has only been conducted on a small scale, anti-refugee groups may believe this is important information that justifies their stance to send refugees back as soon as possible to their own country.
