Trudeau’s government has imposed tax on many items that working class citizens would consider luxuries. On monday, the federal government produced its first budget document in two years. This 739 page document outlines Trudeau’s plan to spend $354 billion while Canada’s economy still struggles to get through the COVID-19 pandemic. Plans to set the Federal minimum wage to $15 are overshadowed by the planned $30 billion to be spent on a subsidized national child care program.
To pay for this hole that the Liberal government is digging themselves in, the Federal Government is set to go through with it’s digital services tax. Taxes will be paid by the middle class by watching and listening to their favourite shows and music on foreign streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, and Spotify. The government predicts that this will bring in little more than $630 million a year or 17 percent of the budget proposed on the nineteenth.
Enjoyers of the television and music won’t be the only people paying more for the Liberal’s faults. One time sales tax on cars, planes, and boats will be taxed 20 of their sales value over a $100 000 threshold. "If you've been lucky enough, or smart enough, or hard-working enough, to afford to spend $100,000 on a car, or $250,000 on a boat — congratulations. And thank you for contributing a little bit of that good fortune to help heal the wounds of COVID and invest in our future collective prosperity," (CBC) Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland mocked in her statement of the new fees, which will only bring in $120 million a year.
The very few details of the new tax on vacant homes owned by foreigners in the budget document states that it could bring in $175 million a year starting January. The little information of this pressing issue was amplified by the lack of detail in the budget about enforcement. James Marple, an economist, voices his opinion on the new levies: "People think there's a massive amount of homes that foreigners have bought [but] it's just not accurate," Marple said. "I don't think it's going to really do much in terms of changing affordability — it's purely political to show they're doing something."
