In 20 November 2020, CERN has announced the development of a project for the study of multiverses and the test of hypothesis related to multiverses. Its goal is to open the question of multiverses with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The experiment is planned to begin on 2023 and will take place at an underground laboratory of CERN in the city of Geneva, Switzerland. The scientists predict that the result of this experiment may be found before 2032. Background CERN’s theoretical physicists have been studying multiverses, a mathematical model of an imaginary space which is infinite and filled with other universes, for a long time. These studies started during the time of the Soviet scientist Gennady Chibisov and Russian theoretical physicist Alexei Smirnov. In 1989, these two scientists published their theory in “New ideas in Physics”, an academic journal. In the same year, Smirnov and a team of physicists published another theory that describes how physical laws change with changes in universe expansion. Both works refer to mathematical equations describing the structure of multiverse.In 2002, theoretical physicist Alexander Vilenkin published a book titled “Many worlds in one: The discovery of universality in quantum mechanics”. In it, he described the ideas of quantum multiverses, which in his opinion are the simplest and the most believable models. The multiverse theory postulates that there are a large number of parallel universes. All these universes are similar to our own but with small or even large differences. There may be variations in the laws of physics in different universes, which is explained by the existence of multiverses. In Vilenkin’s model, the universe has no boundary, only a border with the other universes. In his opinion, the universe is shaped as a tunnel or wormhole, which connects different universes and allows for their transfer of matter and information. According to the ideas of the multiverse theory, it is possible for an event to be in two places at once: in the universe in which it happened and in a parallel universe. Quantum mechanical measurement of physical quantities is the only reliable way to detect parallel universes. Quantum multiverses have existed in theory for years. In 1992, theoretical physicist David Deutsch from University of Oxford published a book called “The Fabric of Reality”, which describes the structure of quantum multiverses. In the following years, quantum multiverses were widely used in science fiction to describe a large number of worlds. For example, science fiction writer Larry Niven, in his novel “The Ringworld Throne”, proposed a theory that a civilization could be spread through a number of different universes and universes. In the book, humans are able to travel to any location in space by means of a spaceship capable of navigating through space-time tunnels. Theoretical physicists have developed many models that describe how the universe began, but none of them is able to explain why there is no more than 10−30 (10−30 is one in a quintillion) of the elements on our planet that have not been formed in the course of the evolution of the universe. It is possible that an infinite number of universes exist, where other properties that are not known by us could exist. If the number of universes is infinite, a question arises as to whether they interact with each other and whether they are accessible. This issue has arisen in an interesting form in the famous concept of the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. This concept, which became popular in the 80s, suggests that every quantum phenomenon, even if the corresponding experiment is repeated exactly, takes place only in one universe.
